General Guidelines

1. The Academic Year

The College follows a trimester system starting from June and ending by the last week of March. After each semester there would be exams for the subjects taught in that semester.

2. Two-Year Course in Philosophy

The institute offers a two-year course in philosophy that caters to the ecclesiastical requirements of the philosophical formation of consecrated religious and of the intellectual formation of Salesians during the immediate post-novitiate period. The institute is open to have students from other religious orders and congregations.

3. Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the two-year course in philosophy, the candidate should have attained at least a Pre-university / Pre-degree / Higher Secondary certificate or its equivalent. The medium of instruction being English; it is mandatory that the students have sufficient knowledge of the language.

4. Attendance at Class

Every student is obliged to attend all the classes of every prescribed subject. The teacher, at the time of evaluation, takes into account also the attendance at class. If a student, for any reason whatsoever, is absent, whether continuously or not, for more than one third of the duration of any trimester or of any course, he has to repeat that trimester or that subject. Any absence from regular classes requires intimation from the superior/guardian stating the reason for the same.

5. Assignments

Every trimesters of each year, the students are expected to submit an assignment each, computer printed. The length of the assignment shall be from 12 to 15 foolscap pages at 1.5 spacing. They are written under the guidance of the professors nominated by the principal. Assignments that do not obtain 40% marks are to be redone, and those that obtain less than 60% in the first attempt are to be reworked.

6. Examinations

a) Examinations in General

The college conducts an examination in each of the subjects taught, at the end of every trimester or at the completion of the syllabus. In order to pass in any of the examinations the student must secure at least 40% marks. If a student fails in an examination, he must repeat the examination, for which a student has to pay an additional Rs. 100 for every repeated examination. The student may be given a maximum of two chances for the repetition of the examination. The re-examination is to be conducted within ten days of the publishing of the results for which the initiative must come from the student. Anyone who fails to appear for the re-exam even after the stipulated time, can do the exam during the summer ministry. Any candidate who fails to secure the minimum pass mark even in the second repetition exam is expected to repeat the course in its entirety.

b) Examinations in Philosophy and Allied Subjects

The examinations in philosophy and allied subjects may be oral or written, decided upon by the teacher with the approval of the principal.

Oral examinations in these subjects should be of at least 10 minutes’ duration. 30% to 40% may be allotted for internal assessment, which is a possibility left to the discretion of the teacher.

The general grading system of marks is as follows:

i) Pass Mark = 40%
ii) Satisfactory = 40% - 49%
iii) III Class = 50% - 59%
iv) II Class = 60% - 69%
v) I Class = 70% - 79%
vi) Distinction = 80% and above

Comprehensive Examination

A final and comprehensive examination in philosophy is held in the sixth trimester. Before a student appears for the comprehensive examination.

i. The student should have passed in all philosophical and allied subjects taught during the duration of the course. The courses in Salesiana (meant for Salesian students) and vernacular (meant for all resident students) do not form part of the obligatory curriculum for other students.
ii. The student should have submitted all the assignments.

The final and comprehensive examination consists of:

i. a scientific assignment/dissertation of 30 to 35, 1.5 spaced, foolscap pages, computer printed, on a philosophical topic approved by the faculty, and under the guidance of a professor of philosophy, authorized by the Principal. Every student should submit to the principal three copies of the dissertation.
ii. a comprehensive oral examination that consists of the main themes of philosophy, consisting of the treatises, Indian and Western philosophy. It is held separately before a board of three examiners and lasts at least 45 minutes. Questions based on the dissertation may also be asked during the comprehensive oral examination.
iii. a student has to pass in both the dissertation and the comprehensive oral examination independently in order to get the certificate from the institute.

Grade in Philosophy

The final grade in philosophy is calculated as follows:

i. 50% of the marks will be derived from the average of the marks obtained for the subjects covered during the duration of the studies. While computing this, Logic and the six major treatises of philosophy are marked out of 100 marks each, Indian philosophy and History of Western Philosophy are out of 200 marks each, and ancillary subjects that have more than 5 ECTS of class are out of 100 marks each, while those with 5 or lesser number of ECTS are out of 50 marks each. English language and term papers are marked out of 100 marks each.
ii. 50% of the marks are derived from the comprehensive examination. While computing this, 50% of the marks are for the scientific assignment/dissertation, while 50% of the marks are for the comprehensive examination.
