Posted: Sep 8th, 2025
Report on Village Experience at Attapadi (8th – 13th September 2025) From 8th to 13th September 2025, we had the opportunity to stay at AADI – Attapadi Adivasi Development Initiative near Aanikatti, under the guidance of Fr. Kamal and Fr. Anthony, Jesuit priests. The week-long experience was enriching, filled with learning, service, and interaction with the tribal people. Day 1 – Arrival and Orientation We reached AADI on the evening of 8th September. After settling in, we had an orientation where the Fathers explained the purpose of our stay and gave us directions for the coming days. Day 2 – Meeting Nanjiyamma and Exploring We met Nanjiyamma, the first Adivasi woman to win a National Award as a Malayalam and Tamil playback singer. Her story was inspiring. Later, we visited the CST Fathers and a nearby church. In the evening, we climbed a beautiful hill and returned to AADI. Day 3 – Visit to NRC Hospital and Girls’ Hostel We visited the Government NRC Hospital, which serves the tribal people. Later, at a girls’ hostel, we conducted a programme filled with singing, dancing, and games. The joy and smiles of the children made the day very special. Day 4 – Service and Recreation In the morning, we helped a poor woman shift her house-building materials, such as metal and bricks. She was very happy and grateful, as were the Fathers who organized the work. In the evening, we visited a nearby water park and returned to AADI. Day 5 – Mission Visit and Village Programme We went to Mulli, where we met a parish priest of the mission station and the Franciscan Sisters, who serve as nurses and care for the health of the people. Afterwards, we enjoyed some time swimming in the river. From there, we walked to a nearby village, interacted with the people, and organized a short, action-packed programme for the SC community. Day 6 – Conclusion and Departure On the final day, we celebrated the Holy Eucharist together. After breakfast, we departed from AADI with hearts full of gratitude. Reflection This experience was truly enriching. Living in an environment close to the forest, surrounded by hills, mountains, wild boars, and peacocks, gave us a sense of peace and wonder. We learned about the simple lifestyle of the people, their struggles, and their joy. The care and hospitality of Fr. Kamal and Fr. Anthony made the entire stay memorable.
